Lower back involvement
A lumbar disc problem can be associated with pain or altered sensation traveling into a leg.
Herniated and Bulging Discs · Shelton, Connecticut
A report that says “disc bulge” or “herniation” can leave you with more questions than answers. Let’s connect the finding to your symptoms, your examination and your options.
Understand the condition
A bulging disc extends outward over a broader area. A herniation occurs when inner disc material pushes through a tear in the outer layer. Either can occur without symptoms. When nearby nerves become irritated, symptoms may extend into an arm or leg. The goal is to understand whether the finding actually explains what you feel.
A lumbar disc problem can be associated with pain or altered sensation traveling into a leg.
A cervical disc problem can be associated with shoulder, arm or hand symptoms.
A disc change on imaging does not, by itself, prove that it is the source of pain.
Your evaluation
Bring your MRI report, any available images, and the recommendations you have already received. Discuss the activities that have become difficult and what you want to return to. Dr. Dalfino can review these details alongside your examination and explain whether care at this center is appropriate or another opinion is needed.

Conservative care may include activity adjustments, exercise or physical therapy, and medication managed by a prescribing clinician. Surgery is considered in some cases, including persistent disabling symptoms or worsening neurological problems. A disc diagnosis does not automatically mean surgery, and it does not automatically make someone a candidate for a particular non-surgical treatment.
New difficulty urinating, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or rapidly worsening leg weakness needs emergency medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine office appointment. New or worsening weakness also deserves prompt medical attention.
