Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow · Shelton, Connecticut

When gripping hurts,
look beyond the grip.

Opening a jar, carrying a bag or swinging a club should not define your day around elbow pain. Start with an evaluation of what is provoking your symptoms.

Understand the condition

Two common patterns. One important distinction.

Tennis elbow typically affects the outside of the elbow; golfer’s elbow affects the inside. Both involve tendons near the elbow and can occur with repeated gripping or wrist movements. You do not need to play either sport to develop symptoms.

01

Outside elbow pain

Notice whether lifting or gripping brings discomfort along the outside of your elbow.

02

Inside elbow pain

Tell us about discomfort along the inside of the elbow and forearm.

03

Everyday demands

Work tasks, hobbies and exercise habits help us understand the demands on your arm.

Your evaluation

Make your visit
about your situation.

Bring details of repetitive tasks, recent changes in activity and any prior treatment. Your examination considers the elbow, wrist and arm rather than assuming every gripping problem is a tendon injury.

Explain what you would like to do more comfortably, whether that means work, sleep, exercise or everyday tasks. Your goals help focus the conversation.

Care planning

Choose the next step
with a clearer picture.

A conservative plan may include modifying aggravating activities and gradually rebuilding strength with individually selected exercises. We will discuss whether our services fit your findings and when another clinician’s input would be useful.

When to seek prompt medical attention

Seek prompt medical assessment after a significant injury, visible deformity, a hot swollen joint with fever, or new loss of strength or sensation.

Common questions

A little more clarity.

Do I have to play tennis or golf to get these problems?

No. Repetitive work, household tasks and other activities can also place demands on the tendons around the elbow.

Is hand numbness always part of tennis elbow?

No. Numbness can have other causes and deserves assessment. Tell us where it occurs and whether you have weakness.

Can I keep doing my usual activities?

That depends on your findings and symptoms. Discuss which tasks to modify and how to return gradually rather than pushing through worsening pain.
